CRIME NEWS

  • Fire officials confirmed the arson at the century-old Dixie Cup factory in Wilson Borough was deliberate on March 14—three separate ignition points on the top floor sparked a near two-month investigation—and firefighters controlled the blaze within about 30 minutes with no injuries reported.  Lehigh Valley Live

  • The Allentown Economic Development Corporation received international honors from InBIA—winning the 2025 Dinah Adkins Award for Non-Technology-Focused ESO and the Randall M. Whaley Award to recognize excellence and innovation in supporting local entrepreneurship.  Lehigh Valley Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Muhlenberg College students presented ideas for Allentown’s first climate action plan at the Environmental Advisory Council meeting on May 6 — the proposals aimed to lower food waste, boost renewable energy, and reduce emissions by suggesting measures like a citywide composting program and energy upgrades for buildings. When complete, Allentown will become the third major Lehigh Valley city to have a climate action plan and is gathering resident feedback through a survey.  WLVR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners will consider a request from Fellowship Community to change its retirement community expansion from one phase to three phases—reducing the need for an immediate $100,000 outlay. The phased plan is aimed at lowering upfront costs and generating revenue from the first building—groundbreaking is expected this summer.  WLVR
  • Local Latino leaders and UnidosUS Action Fund met at M Studios to warn that proposed federal budget cuts to Medicaid and SNAP could affect 75,000 local children and many families by reducing healthcare and food support. They urged residents to vote in the upcoming primaries and contact lawmakers to oppose the cuts—steps they believe are crucial for protecting essential services.  WLVR
