COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A homeless encampment near Jordan Creek is preparing to move out by August 25 due to flooding concerns, with Help in Hand—a Bethlehem demolition contractor—helping clean up on Saturday. The city also announced that the YMCA will open its warming shelter on September 30 to provide 60 beds for adults in need.  69 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Krispy Kreme will launch its Harry Potter: Back to Hogwarts collection on Monday, Aug. 18—offering doughnuts and magical drinks themed after each Hogwarts house with unique flavors, and the treats will be available until Sept. 14.  Daily Voice
  • Hotel Bethlehem, built in 1922, has been named USA Today’s top historic hotel for the fifth year in a row—this win came after it outranked Peabody Memphis and Hotel Hershey.  Lehigh Valley Live

CRIME NEWS

  • Carla Bartell, a 59-year-old Allentown woman, pleaded guilty to her sixth DUI and related charges and was sentenced on Aug. 4 by Judge Dennis Reinaker to serve 16 months to 7 years in state prison—this sentence will run consecutively to an 18-month parole violation penalty.  Daily Voice

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Museum of Indian Culture marks its 45th anniversary today with the Roasting Ears of Corn Festival in Allentown—showcasing Native American traditions through cultural demonstrations, music, dance, and local foods.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Comic book fans dressed up, shopped, and met authors and artists at the Lehigh Valley Comic Convention held at Lehigh Carbon Community College on Saturday. Organizer Karen Rello said the event (now 24 years old and featuring special guests and vendors) will return on December 6 with a planned 25th anniversary celebration.  69 News
  • Emblem3, best known for the hit song Chloe (You're the One I Want), will perform at Archer Music Hall’s Arrow room at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14th, and indie-pop band The Foxies will open the show.  Lehigh Valley News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allentown officials and state leaders toured stops on the planned MLK Trail extension that will extend the Martin Luther King Drive Trail from Fountain Park’s basketball court to Lehigh Parkway with a first phase costing about $2.3 million. Officials said construction will start later this year—after permits are secured—and the new trail will connect parks and provide safe routes for commuters.  Lehigh Valley News
