COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pickleball for a Purpose is a fundraising event set for October 11 at St. Luke’s Sportsplex that features competitive and social pickleball tournaments for men, women, and mixed teams, along with cornhole, ping pong, and a 45-minute beginner class — it also offers a silent auction with prizes like signed memorabilia and vacation packages, while registration costs are $45 for tournaments and $25 for games and non-players can attend for free — food, drinks, and live music will be available throughout the day.  Lehigh Valley Live

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Fountain Hill said a man was shot in the chest on Cherokee Street around 9 p.m.—they are seeking two suspects while the victim remains in stable condition.  69 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hanover Township Planning Commission reviewed a zoning amendment that could allow up to 10 warehouses near Lehigh Valley International Airport—part of a deal with developer Majestic Realty that raises buffer space and alters land use rules to limit unchecked development—while township supervisors will decide soon.  69 News
  • County officials are advancing two redevelopment projects at the old Iron Works site in Catasauqua and the former Dairy site in Whitehall. The lead agency applied for a $1 million grant to fund plans for apartments, shops, and parks—if the grant is approved by year’s end, proposals for the Dairy site will be reviewed after the Sept. 19 deadline.  69 News
  • The Allentown Planning Commission approved a plan for Seven Brew Coffee to demolish the former Boston Market at 385 S. Cedar Crest Blvd and build a 540 square foot drive thru coffee shop with a 280 square foot remote cooler and storage structure. The commission also extended the Allentown Commerce Park warehouse project through Sept. 30 and tabled a request for The Swans Apartment project—a seven story building with 142 units, parking, and retail.  69 News
  • On Monday, the Environmental Advisory Council partnered with city officials to launch a trash container survey and discuss a pilot program to reduce litter in Allentown. City officials plan to expand the survey to cover all areas — the move comes as residents strongly support using containers.  WLVR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America said on Sept. 9 that Lehigh Valley now ranks as the third-worst area for asthma in 2025—a slight improvement from its worst ranking in 2024, though poor air quality and limited healthcare still affect locals.   • Officials in Lehigh County reported 42 suicides so far this year while Northampton County declared September Suicide Prevention Month in response to rising numbers during the pandemic, urging residents to call 24/7 hotlines such as 988 if they need help. Both counties stress that support is just a phone call away—resources remain available for anyone in crisis.  69 News
