COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, over 100 volunteers from the Red Cross and local businesses went door to door in Allentown to install new fire alarms and provide in-home fire safety training. The campaign reached neighborhoods from Tilghman Street to Linden Street—areas that had experienced severe home fires in recent years.  69 News
  • On Thursday, Allentown renamed Valania Park as Clyde E. Bosket, SR. Park to honor the first state master barber who arrived in 1956, trained hundreds and marched in Washington D.C. during the Civil Rights Movement. He passed away last October at 94 and left a lasting legacy in the community.  69 News
  • The 32nd annual Day of Caring saw 1,500 volunteers working at 60 nonprofits across the Valley to build bunk beds at the River Crossing YMCA and clean apartments at the Sixth Street Shelter. United Way estimated the service is worth nearly $300,000—making it the largest volunteer event in the Lehigh Valley this year.  69 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Governor Shapiro announced on Thursday that the state invested $20M to help B. Braun expand its manufacturing facility in Hanover Township, which will create 200 new full-time jobs over the next three years and keep 1,704 existing positions. The expansion will modernize production for IV therapy, pharmacy admixture and compounding operations—$1.5M in state funds support the project.  Lehigh Valley Business
  • Air Products is laying off 14 union employees at Gardner Cryogenics in Upper Macungie Township due to declining orders—its notice, effective November 17, warns additional cuts in both union and non-union roles are expected.  Lehigh Valley Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local mother said the school lost her 6-year-old son at Ramos Elementary when he walked out unsupervised—he got lost for two hours until a Good Samaritan found him standing alone in a busy four-lane street.  69 News
  • Allison Emanuel, a junior studying marketing and agribusiness from Lehigh County, was awarded the $2,300 Baker Memorial 4-H Scholarship by Pennsylvania 4-H—recognizing her eight years of leadership in local programs. The award honors the legacy of Professor Allen L. Baker and his son Richard H. Baker and supports her ongoing studies at Penn State.  Parkland Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WM held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday at its new Grand Central Recycling Facility located at 910 W. Pennsylvania Ave in Plainfield Township; the $48 million center processes about 300 tons of recyclables each day from the Slate Belt and Lehigh Valley + beyond, and was attended by state officials including Pa. Sen. Lisa Boscola and Pa. Rep. Ann Flood.  69 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Whitehall Township Supervisors held their first board meeting in the renovated municipal building on Sept. 8 and discussed a land use appeal along with updates on renovation work and a planned fire safety inspection program—minor issues like the elevator are set to be resolved soon with pilot tests in spring.  Parkland Press
  • Governor Shapiro received the 2025 Champion for Aging Award at a national conference in Philadelphia — his work on the Aging Our Way plan was honored and he said his office will add more services to help older people live safely and with respect.  69 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Luke’s University Health Network was named the top health care employer in Pennsylvania by Forbes for the third year in a row with over 23,000 team members making it the largest employer in the Lehigh Valley. The network also ranked as a Top 10 employer statewide — trailing Johnson and Johnson, Google, and the Milton Hershey school based on employee satisfaction and reputation.  Lehigh Valley Business

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bethlehem Catholic volleyball stayed undefeated last week—winning four matches including two over Emmaus and Freedom. The team is one of two unbeaten squads in the EPC and will face Central Catholic this week—focusing on continued growth.  Lehigh Valley Press
  • Last week, Catasauqua cross country teams ran four meets where the girls won two—beating Northern Lehigh and Lehighton—but lost to Palmerton and Jim Thorpe, and the boys won against Northern Lehigh and Jim Thorpe while losing to Palmerton and Lehighton. The Catty field hockey team won 2-1 over Saucon Valley Tuesday with goals by Ava Wetzel and Shelby Haldeman and a pass from Dakota Veles while boys soccer, girls volleyball, and girls soccer lost their games.  Lehigh Valley Press
