COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Allentown turned downtown parking spaces into a pop-up public park for International Parking Day where residents enjoyed popcorn, hot dogs, live music and mini golf—money from a pie in the face activity raised funds for local shelters.  69 News
  • Nearly 1,500 corporate volunteers from 60 companies put in 8,200 service hours at 60 nonprofits during United Way’s Day of Caring on Thursday—helping local groups prepare facilities for the upcoming season.  Lehigh Valley Business

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday morning, the bodies of Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Sergeant Cody Becker—officers fatally shot while trying to arrest Matthew James Ruth in North Codorus Township—were carried by a procession from York County to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest as two other officers were seriously injured and some roads were closed along the route.  69 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate was 4.0% in August while the U.S. rate rose to 4.3% and total nonfarm jobs reached a record high for the 16th consecutive month—Labor and Industry reported a decrease of 7,000 in the state’s civilian labor force. Job gains in education and health services added 3,700 positions, and improvements occurred in seven of the 11 industry supersectors.  Lehigh Valley Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lehigh Carbon Community College's Career Development Center will host jobfairs for Fall 2025 at the Allentown site at Donley Center on Oct. 23, Tamaqua on Oct. 15, and the Schnecksville main campus on Nov. 6. Employers can register now to meet students, alumni and local community members seeking job opportunities.  Parkland Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Shapiro toured the B. Braun plant on Thursday where the company will use $21.5 million—$1.5 million of that from state grants—to expand its apprenticeship program and add at least 200 new jobs over three years. He also addressed a fatal shooting in North Codorus Township on Wednesday that killed three police officers and criticized the Senate for stalling a budget deal affecting local funding.  Lehigh Valley News
