CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities said a 17-year-old boy has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his friend died while table surfing behind a car at Freedom High School and that a 20-year-old woman suffered catastrophic head injuries while surfing on a car in Bethlehem Township—both incidents were captured on TikTok.  Lehigh Valley Live

CULTURE NEWS

  • On a clear Saturday morning, retired steelworker Joe Mayer led a 90-minute tour at the National Museum of Industrial History where 12 visitors learned about Bethlehem Steel’s legacy—Mayer shared his 22 years of hands-on experience and first-hand details of steelmaking history.  Bethlehem Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, U.S. News & World Report released national rankings showing Muhlenberg College in Allentown climbed to No. 70 overall among national liberal arts colleges, No. 49 for best value, and No. 59 for undergraduate teaching. It also rose 39 points on the social mobility list and appeared on the national undergraduate psychology program ranking.  Muhlenberg College
  • The Bethlehem Area School District announced that Ralph Andrews was selected as the new principal of Hanover ES pending board approval from the Sept. 22 meeting. He has led elementary schools at Parkside Education Center and S.S. Palmer ES and served as an assistant principal at Roberto Clemente Charter School.  Bethlehem Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the Sept. 10 meeting, Commissioner Cole-Borghi, who faces drug charges, declared his innocence and sparked divided support from fellow commissioners and citizens over his decision to stay on the board. The board also debated committee changes and approved resolutions—including merit recognition for the Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Department—with the next meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today.  Bethlehem Press
  • Yesterday, Allentown officials reopened a 37-foot aluminum pedestrian bridge across Trout Creek to give students from South Mountain Middle and Dodd Elementary and bus riders a safer route—city staff replaced the old, unsafe span with an ADA-compliant structure including paved ramps and new abutments.  WLVR
  • Allentown joined Work for America’s Spotlight Cities program (a move to attract talent through the Civic Match platform to reach over 11,000 displaced workers) as it modernizes its hiring process. Mayor Matt Tuerk said the new partnership may help fill the city’s 10 open government positions from upcoming retirements and turnover.  WLVR
  • At a Sept. 9 Hanover Township meeting, 19 residents and officials clashed over a zoning amendment that would allow up to 10 warehouse buildings on commercial land near Lehigh Valley International Airport—residents expressed concerns over traffic, noise, water runoff, and property taxes while officials warned about using names without proper consent in public comments.  Bethlehem Press

  • PennDOT will partner with local police+health groups to offer free car seat installation help for parents and caregivers at Target in South Whitehall Township on September 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Students from several schools are hosting a workshop at Nazareth Area High School auditorium to reduce the stigma around mental illness during National Suicide Prevention Month—led by the Aevidum club, which means 'I got your back,' the event marks its 10th anniversary as students build new support networks.   • The American Red Cross urges everyone to prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month by making plans and gathering essential supplies—this guidance comes as floods and severe storms have recently damaged homes.   • St. Luke’s University Health Network was named one of three top health systems for safety and quality by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality based on CMS and Leapfrog evaluations.   • The Lehigh Valley IronPigs led Minor League Baseball in attendance for the third straight season by drawing 585,167 fans to Coca-Cola Park during 2025—after they welcomed their 10 millionth fan on Sept. 2. The team will start the 2026 season at home on March 27.  Lehigh Valley News
