- ➤ Parkland Garden Club hosted a gardening program for children ages 6 to 12 at Upper Macungie Township Summer Camp held June through August at Veterans, Jaindl and Fogelsville elementary schools. Club co-chairs and volunteers taught campers about pressing flowers and planting seeds—helping them learn through both reading and hands-on activities. Parkland Press

- ➤ Swift restaurant in Wilbur Mansion rebranded its dining offer with a seasonal menu and farm-to-glass cocktails at a Thursday launch party in the Fountain Hill District, where about 100 people attended. The new menu features dishes like lump crab cake and duck à l’orange as chief cook Brandon Otto and bar manager Katy Mead worked with local farms + distilleries to bring fresh flavors. - ➤ Retired steelworker Joe Mayer led a 12-person tour of the former Bethlehem Steel plant at the National Museum of Industrial History to share stories from his 22-year career and explain how the plant built landmark structures. He said tours last 90 minutes — tickets are available at the visitor center — and he urged training younger guides as seasoned workers age. Parkland Press

- ➤ A view on September 26 revealed that the waterfall at Wehr’s Dam in Covered Bridge Park was missing because of below-average rainfall. The dam’s repair work—approved in a 2016 referendum and completed in February 2023—had restored its flow until recent dry conditions emerged. Lehigh Valley Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Whitehall Township is moving forward with long-anticipated improvements at the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue—bid ads will be released in late summer or early fall and construction will begin this winter to finish before early 2026. The board also rejected a pre-security agreement proposal from Ridge Farms developers and said township staff will work with them to refine the plan. Parkland Press
- ➤ Hundreds of human services workers in Northampton County face furlough on Oct. 20 if Pennsylvania lawmakers do not pass a budget. County Executive Lamont McClure described the measure as a last resort — warning the suspensions may endanger lives in child welfare, mental health, and aging services. 69 News
- ➤ County employees and SEIU local 668 members rallied outside Northampton County Human Services in Bethlehem to protest possible furloughs on October 20th because state lawmakers have not passed a budget. County Executive Lamont McClure said the furloughs are a last resort and may affect about (175) workers while the county's shortfall could hit (30 million) by year end. 69 News
- ➤ U.S. Route 22 now meets the criteria for an interstate after traffic increased to over 100,000 vehicles daily, and the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission approved the change to improve safety. The plan will include road upgrades — such as wider shoulders and new ramps — and may take about a year to complete. WLVR

- ➤ Anne Baum, the first president of Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital since 2022, will step down on Oct. 31—she led key operations and strategic planning at the hospital. Reilly Children’s provides care with over 30 pediatric specialists and specialty centers such as a surgery center and emergency department. Lehigh Valley Business
- ➤ Lehigh County officials, Cedarbrook staff and guests signed the final steel beam on September 12 at Cedarbrook Senior Care’s Allentown campus to mark an upgrade project that will add 240 beds and cut room occupancy from four to two—replacing 1920s era beds and improving care for mostly Medicare residents. The project will finish soon to better serve local seniors. Parkland Press

- ➤ Emmaus golf head coach Patrick Birns eased pressure on senior Alexis Teichman by having her play individually at the East Penn Conference Championships on September 15 at Great Bear Golf Club—she won by five strokes with a score of 86 and will compete next week for a District 11 title. - ➤ The Lehigh Gap Nature Center will hold its 14th annual More or Less 10K Trail Run on Oct. 11 and offer a challenging course with significant elevation changes along Blue Mountain's Kittatinny Ridge — a more family-friendly More Than 2 Mile Scamper option will run concurrently. Runners can choose the route that best fits their abilities. Lehigh Valley Live
