  • Jewish community members and religious leaders in the Lehigh Valley expressed cautious hope as a peace agreement was reached after two years of war between Israel and Gaza. They warned that while relief is felt, deep grief remains—families continue to mourn and healing is just beginning.  69 News

  • Nazareth-based Martin Guitar held its first Sustainability Summit on Thursday to show its ethical commitment to sourcing exotic wood for its guitars. President and CEO Thomas Ripsam said the company uses wood from certified sustainable forests and replants trees to build about 150,000 guitars each year — a step to align with environmental efforts.  69 News
  • Celebrity chef Jose Garces opened his second restaurant—Okatshe—on Oct. 1 at 947 W. Hamilton St. in downtown Allentown, serving Japanese cuisine next to his Cuban cafe Rosa Blanca.  Lehigh Valley Live

CULTURE NEWS

  • ArtsQuest and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs are launching a package ticket—costing $24 in November and $28 in December plus taxes and fees—that gives visitors same-day access to Christkindlmarkt’s German-style holiday market and the Illumination light show at Coca-Cola Park. The package includes a hot cocoa voucher and a movie pass, and tickets are available on the Illumination website with Christkindlmarkt running Nov. 14 through 30 on Fridays to Sundays and Dec. 4 through 21 on Thursdays to Sundays.  Lehigh Valley News
  • Jacinth Headlam, founder and CEO of the annual Innastar Trailblazer Awards Gala, said local trailblazers in entertainment and the community will be honored at Archer Music Hall next Saturday, October 18th at 5 p.m.—the event features a red carpet VIP reception, an awards show, and an after party at the Moxy Hotel.  69 News

  • A Pennsylvania nonprofit has awarded an Allentown school an education grant—designed to give local students a chance to improve their learning opportunities.  69 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the Lehigh Valley Breathes project released a July data snapshot that shows PM2.5 pollution is highest near busy roads and industrial sites—rush hour and heavy truck traffic drive the peaks. The study compared eight monitoring spots in urban, suburban, rural and residential areas and will guide future air quality policies.  WLVR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Whitehall Township is boosting its emergency preparedness by calling on community volunteers to help manage shelters and support evacuations during severe weather—Emergency Management Coordinator Don Jacobs said the new efforts follow the board's adoption of key emergency and hazard mitigation plans that may bring in state and federal funding for projects like flood control. Volunteers will receive free training through the Red Cross to ensure they can assist with language access and other critical tasks when emergencies arise.  Parkland Press
  • Ever True Luther Crest Senior Living hosted a free nonpartisan forum on Sept. 29 where candidates for South Whitehall Township Commissioner shared their backgrounds and policy ideas—former Commissioner Brad Osbourne moderated the discussion.  Parkland Press

  • Amazon Prime released the new documentary Saquon on October 9, showing NFL star Saquon Barkley growing up in Whitehall and rising to football fame.
