COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Neffs National Bank donated $528 to Leo’s League Pediatric Cancer Fund during its yearlong Dress Down Day initiative—raising funds from employees and customers. The gift will help families facing childhood cancer.  Lehigh Valley Press
  • The Valor Clinic Foundation will hold its annual Patriot’s Ball on November 8 (6:30–11 p.m.) at Skytop Lodge to raise funds for local veterans and programs such as the new food pantry at Camp Trexler. Tickets cost $125 per person (sponsorships and donations are also accepted) to support essential services including the homeless shelter and counseling program.  Lehigh Valley Press
  • Morgenland Church in Orefield will host its famous all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatball dinner from 4—7 p.m. Nov 1 with a basket raffle, and it will take orders for a hoagie sale with pickup on Nov 11 and a candy sale with pickup on Dec 13. Christ’s Church at Lowhill and Ziegels Union Church will offer additional food events—a taco food truck on Nov 4, a cheesesteak truck benefiting Wreaths Across America on Nov 11, and a handmade market on Nov 15—aimed at drawing local diners.  Lehigh Valley Press
  • Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites’ Turkey Trot 5K & Fun Walk (its 23rd year) runs on Nov. 29 at 9 a.m. in Bethlehem’s Historic District, starting at the 1869 Luckenbach Mill and featuring an expanded costume contest with new youth age groups on a scenic route. Registration costs $40 (rising to $45 on race day), and participants will receive a T-shirt, refreshments, and admission to the Trees of Historic Bethlehem exhibition.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Wilson Area LINCS Coalition for Families and Youth received a $10,000 community grant from Thrivent Member Network after winning first place in The Big Give Back contest—over 1,400 votes supported the effort and the funds will help feed hungry children in Wilson Borough.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Members 1st Federal Credit Union is giving $27,500 to food banks in 11 counties to help families who might not get enough food during the federal shutdown — each county will get $2,500.  Lehigh Valley Business

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lehigh Valley International Airport recorded 77,155 passengers in September, a 2.2% increase from last year, and air cargo rose 34.5%—a sign of growing travel and improved connectivity. Allegiant Air will add nonstop flights to Fort Myers on November 13th to give travelers more choices.  Lehigh Valley Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In September, Heidelberg Township’s Environmental Advisory Council planted 30 native wildflowers in the riparian buffer near Werley’s Corner Road to improve water quality and remove invasive Common Mugwort—efforts that continue to boost local conservation practices.  Lehigh Valley Press
  • Pennsylvania will open fall turkey hunting in several areas on November 1, but the Lehigh Valley remains closed due to low wild turkey nesting success as shown in the summer survey—hunters must use proper tags and follow health protocols to reduce avian influenza risk.  Lehigh Valley Live

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Oct. 15, third-grade students from Sheckler Elementary School visited borough hall to listen to officials explain roles in code enforcement, public works, the treasury, and the fire department. They toured the departments and then had lunch in the park — gaining a clear view of how local government works.  Lehigh Valley Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marco Andretti, 38, from Bushkill Township announced his retirement from racing—he will not enter the Indy 500 next season and will focus on his daughter, business ventures, and a memoir—Defending the Dynasty.
